Discover the remarkable life and seven-decade career of Roanoke-born artist Dorothy Gillespie with a special screening of "Dorothy Gillespie: Courage, Independence, and Color."
A painter, sculptor, installation artist, educator, and advocate for women in the arts, Gillespie forged her own path through a rapidly changing art world. Her career touched many of the major artistic movements of the 20th century, from abstract expressionism and decorative abstraction to site-specific installations and public art. Her unmistakable use of brilliant color and sweeping, ribbon-like forms made her work instantly recognizable to legions of admirers.
Gillespie also believed art belonged beyond gallery walls. Her vibrant sculptures appeared in museums, universities, airports, civic spaces, and other public settings across the country, bringing art directly into people’s everyday lives.
Following the film, Gary Israel, Gillespie’s son and co-producer of the documentary, will take questions from the audience and share personal stories and insights into his mother’s art, life, and legacy.
