About this Event
We are back! Sunday October 13th we are hosting our next Salon Sunday at Wild Sisters Book Co! Our guest speaker will be William Burg, author of “Wicked Sacramento” and six other books on Sacramento history. He will present stories from a Sacramento neighborhood first called the Tenderloin, and then the West End, during the first half of the 20th century. This area was a multicultural neighborhood, and also the site of businesses related to the sex work industry, including sites of prostitution, burlesque and striptease, taxi dance halls, and drag clubs. Sometimes called the “demi-monde” or “half-world,” many of these businesses, and the people who worked there, existed in the gray area between legality and crime. More permissive than the sexual mores of the time, it could also be a dangerous and deadly place. Civic leaders attempted to curb vice in this district, but many had their own hidden motives. Learn about the people, the places, and the events of Sacramento’s hidden history in this engaging talk.
This event is free but due to limited space we ask that you RSVP.
Salons are the perfect kind of event to discuss edgy topics, learn about weird stuff, and share local stories, right here in our own neighborhood. These bi-monthly events may include presentations and discussions concerning death, true crime, science, hauntings, astronomy, biology, astrology, history, anthropology…the list is unending. We must insist that due to the subject matter attendees be 16 or older.
Can’t wait to see you there!
