About this Event

Mozaico Flamenco's Sunday Salon Series presents emerging artists & flamenco dancers Amber “La Joyanka” Rowell & Kara “La Picante” Wiebe in "La Cueva" aka THE CAVE at the Anne MacDonald Studio in North Vancouver on February 5 at 7:30pm. Catch a grand show with guest guitarist Jake "Chinito" Lee from Victoria, with Maestro Oscar Nieto, La Sirena cantaora and Davide Sampaolo on cajon.

Height is not the only difference between these two dancers. Kara is feisty and Amber is calm, Kara has spit-fire footwork and Amber has long flowing arms, but both have an enormous love for the art of Flamenco and plenty of grit and determination to express themselves in "La Cueva". "La Cueva" seeks to transport the audience to the caves in the hills of the city of Granada, Andalucia. This intimate setting inspires a family-style juerga where every seat is at the forefront of all the action! From traditional folkloric dances to deep tragic "jondo" song and from Galicia to Andalucia, enjoy a glass of wine (or two) and join in the juerga. Come feel the raw, untamed energy that is Flamenco! Dancing straight from the heart, we will take you on a journey through the emotional spectrum that is inspired by our love for Flamenco.

The Sunday Salon Series showcases seasoned artists at 7:30pm in the first set, followed by question and answer period so that audience can get to know the artists over wine (bring $5). At 8:30pm, Mozaico Flamenco forms an artistic circle and that is where the Flamenco Fiesta begins! We encourage everyone to get dressed up in flamenco flamboyance to celebrate, whether that is a flower in the hair or polka-dot dress, but if you have neither, just come with your voice and clapping hands. Be ready for anything!

This series is supported by the BC Arts Council Impact which supports professional flamenco artists in the tablao scene and gives an opportunity to emerging artists to engage alongside of professionals. Flamenco is an art form of consistent group practise for the "cuadro" and mentorship where emerging artists can sit by seasoned professionals to gain experience.

EXTENDED BIOS:

Kara Wiebe - Kara was born in Abbotsford, BC, and is third generation Canadian born Russian. She is a descendant of the Doukhobors who were banished to Siberian labour camps in the 18th century by the Russian Empire. Immigrating to Canada in 1899, Kara’s family worked the land as Homesteaders in Saskatchewan. She has a background in competitive gymnastics and modern dance but has found her passion in the fervor and artistry of Flamenco. At the age of 22 she moved to Spain on a working holiday that was supposed to last 9 months but ended up staying 2 years. She fell in love with the people, culture, language, food and the way of life there long before she discovered her love for Flamenco. Flamenco allows her to create, express, release, as well as challenge herself. A Postal Worker by day and Flamenca by night, Kara took her first Flamenco class in 2014 and has never looked back.

Amber Rowell - Amber is a second generation British/Canadian who grew up in Surrey. She is a descendant of Celts who traveled from Northwestern Europe and ended up in Ireland, Scotland, Wales and later England. Having grown up with dark and magical tales from Irish and Scottish folklore (as well as being a redhead) she envisions the goddess Brigid with her long red hair and wildness when dancing. Amber has a background in classical Russian ballet, as well as Polynesian, Chinese, jazz, modern and contemporary. Four and a half-years ago she discovered flamenco at the now closed and much missed Kino Café and was immediately drawn to the self-expression, passion and authenticity of this dance form. Amber has also found connection between the traveling Gypsies who ended up in Spain and the Celts who settled in Britain. Both were traveling peoples who finally found a place to call home. Amber feels the same about flamenco - she has found home. An SFU graduate turned mom of a two-year-old Amber uses every moment that is available for Flamenco.
