In The Sermon on the Mount which comprises Chapters 5, 6, and 7 of Matthew's Gospel, Jesus presents probably the clearest picture of the life expected for his followers in the Kingdom of God which he came announcing and inaugurating. As followers of Jesus, his sayings in this section of scripture address our attitudes and behavior with regard to ourselves, each other, our communities, those in authority, and God Himself. In John's Gospel, we see arguably the clearest picture of the identity and mission of Jesus, the incarnate Son of God and Messiah.
We began a study of the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5 this past Spring, studying the Beatitudes and the following sayings concerning the believer's place as salt and light to the world in our treatment of each other and the keeping of God's law, the command to love God with all our being and our neighbors as ourselves. We will begin September 14 moving through Matthew 6 and 7 exploring such topics as prayer, judgment and God's providence toward us and His creation. Subsequently we will begin a study of John's Gospel as we seek to know Christ better and how we are called to make him known. Everyone is invited to join us in the Poynor Room at 9:45 each Sunday morning.
