About this Event
IT STARTED IN THE 60's
Sunday feast was started by our spiritual master Srila Prabhupada back in 1966 in New York. Before any devotees joined him, he used to do everything single handedly - cook, clean, take out the garbage, lead the chanting, lecture and answer questions. Since then it has become a standard program in Hare Krishna temples around the world. It is the devotees' unconditional offering of Krsna's love to the public without any expectation of return. Everyone can come and eat Krsna prasadam to their full satisfaction and enjoy the company of the devotees. The program usually consists of three parts:
KIRTAN
Prolonged and sincere kirtan from the heart brings an ecstatic feeling of the soul. It is not that all people chant at the same time. In kirtan a designated devotee leads the chanting of Hare Krishna mantra and the crowd then repeats the chant after them. In this way, in a call and response fashion, kirtan takes place. This is the only regulation devotees follow while performing kirtan. Otherwise, devotees clap, dance and sometimes even leap into the air!
A tip: Ask the devotees how to do the "the swami step"
BHAGAVAD-GITA CLASS
Bhagavad-gita As It Is by His Divine Grace A.C.Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada is the most widely read translation and commentary of this ancient book of knowledge in the Western world praised by scholars and professors. We read one or two slokas (verses) of this scripture each time in Sanskrit and English. Our dear guests are encouraged to chant Sanskrit as well if they want (it's not so difficult). Purport by Srila Prabhupada is read and then a devotee lectures on the meaning of the sloka drawing from his study of Srila Prabhupada's books, lectures and conversations. Questions and answer section concludes the class.
FEASTING
The devotees spend the Sunday by cooking the best foods for the pleasure of Krsna. Just before the program starts a plate is brought to the altar and is offered with corresponding mantras to the Lord. After the Lord accepts the offering, the foodstuff becomes sanctified and surcharged with Krishna's love. The devotees serve the feast at the end of the program to everyone's delight.
