After our long Christmas holidays break, we return with our opening party of 2022 with a superb double bill of nu-soul/neo-soul/contemporary r'n'b singers, two rising stars of the Leeds scene - Mica Sefia and Jess Edie. Both are final year Leeds Conservatoire music students and both have been causing a stir on the local soul/jazz/hip-hop scenes in the last six months. Now it's time to step up and showcase their music at the legendary Sunday Joint sessions.
Mica Sefia is originally from Liverpool and started singing in a choir aged 7 before moving onto musical theatre and then at 16, she studied popular music at Liverpool Institute Of Performing Arts (6th Form). At 16/17, she was already performing at venues around Liverpool including the legendary Philharmonic Music Room. Two years ago, she arrived at Leeds Conservatoire to continue her popular music studies and got her band together to perform her original music (which she started writing at age 16). They've played at venues across the city including Belgrave Music Hall and Hyde Park Book Club. She also sings in other Leeds bands including Fuchsia and rapper Yusuf Yellow's live band. She's performed packed shows with the latter at Brudenell Social Club and last November, at Hifi Club for Sunday Joint.
Asked who her favourite five singers were, Mica replied with an eclectic list of classic and contemporary soul, pop, rock and folk artists - India Arie, Brittany Howard, Mahalia, Victoria Mońet, Mary J Blige. Great choices and an indication that Mica's own music can't be pigeonholed into just one genre.
Mica's band features some of the best final year musicians at the conservatoire. The full band is : Mica Sefia - lead vocals, Isobel Rice - backing vocals, Mary Jane-Collins - backing vocals, Tom Wright - Drums, Tom Renwick - Keys, Nian Greaves - Guitar, Cameron Matthews - Guitar, Theo Wells-George - Bass. After 2 years of writing, rehearsing and playing out original music with her band, it's time now for Mica to step out onto the Hifi Club/Sunday Joint stage and showcase her music as a headline artist. Definitely one to watch in 2022.
Supporting Mica Sefia will be another great soul singer from Leeds Conservatoire, also in her third year and a seasoned performer but this time, she's showcasing her brand new band. Jess Edie is originally from Manchester, has been studying music in Leeds for the past 2 years and is definitely in the neo-soul/r'n'b musical camp. Her favourite singers are Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, H.E.R and Leeds' very own soul queen Corinne Bailey Rae (who appeared many times at Hifi Club back in the day). Tonight she steps out with her new band (who only formed 4 months ago) and again, features some great next-gen soul/jazz musicians from the conservatoire : Harvey O'Connell - Guitar, Stuart Whyte - Sax, Louis Singleton - Drums, Fergus Leach - Electric Bass (though not on this show). Sunday Joint has a proud record of 27 years of giving new artists/bands their first breaks so get down early and check out Jess Edie and her group at the start of their musical journey. Again, future rising stars of the Leeds nu-soul scene.
Leeds jazz/soul/global beats legendary promoter and DJ Lubi Jovanovic (celebrating 4 decades working in music in 2022), DJing early doors and hosting the night. Sunday Joint DJs on the decks after 11pm. Doors 8pm. Live music from 8.45pm. Great drinks promos. Amazing live music. Late night club session. ***FREE ENTRY***
