Tonight’s Sunday Joint is a lo-fi hip hop x jazz-funk/fusion special featuring two more great bands from Leeds. The main act is an MC-led live hip-hop band who also feature jazz, folk and indie influences in their sound. Support comes from another killer young jazz fusion band from Leeds Conservatoire.
Headliner is Brighton-born, Leeds-based multi-talented artist Bert who brings his lo-fi hip-hop vibes to Sunday Joint promoting his debut EP “It’s all gd dw” on Well Overdue Recordings (also the musical home to Nix Northwest and APLTN). The MC/producer appeared as a guest MC with the Sunday Joint house band last autumn but tonight, he brings in his full 7 piece band featuring some well known Leeds jazz/hip-hop scene faces (including Portraits drummer Luca Ferrara, jazz keys king Glen Leach, bass boss APLTN).
Bert’s musical influences come from across the musical spectrum – hip hop, singer/ songwriter music, indie music, jazz. In a recent interview he names acts that have inspired him and they include A Tribe Called Quest, Mac Miller, The Streets, Little Simz, Laura Marling, Nick Drake, Thom Yorke to name a few. So Bert’s music is a mix of headnodding beats and cool chords that underpin his easy going vocal style, weaving bars about his journey as a young person through modern life today, with all it’s ups, downs and sideways movements. He is a great story teller and those stories are instantly recognised by all of us. They mention stubbing your toe on the door, drinking lemon honey tea, cooking tagliatelle, finding a fiver on the floor, young folk romances, life in student digs, etc….everything we’ve all been through at some time. A lo-fi hip hop people’s poet. Pass through and catch him showcasing his latest EP with a super heavy band.
Sunday Joint’s policy of giving a platform to new and emerging artists from Leeds Conservatoire continues tonight with Clover, a 5 piece jazz fusion band featuring some great musicians currently at the musical institution. The band explores jazz and jazz related genres from Latin music to funk to hip-hop. Influenced by the likes of Robert Glasper and Ezra Collective, the band creates imaginative re-arrangements of other people’s music as well as writing and performing original music too. A quintet of future UK jazz stars in the making, Clover are : Emma Coates – sax, Kuba Chojnacki – guitar, Joe Frost-Tesfaye – keys, Jarred Dean – bass, Finlay Morgan – drums. Get down early doors as this band is pure jazz fusion fire.
Early doors DJ Lubi hosts the night and plays jazzy and soulful sounds before and between live band sets. After the bands at 11pm, DJ Mxtias (Bazuka) and his crew are on the decks with the Moma Cat Disco, dropping big tropical bass and global beats bangers until the early hours. Doors are 8.00pm. Support bands 8.45pm. Headliners 10pm. Entry is, as always, free.
