With nothing to do but observe his neighbours from his rear window, Jeff becomes fixated on the lives of those who live across the courtyard of his apartment block. As he becomes increasingly engrossed in their daily routines, Jeff begins to suspect that one of his neighbours has committed a murder. With the help of his girlfriend Lisa (Grace Kelly) and his nurse Stella (Thelma Ritter), Jeff sets out to uncover the truth.
