About this Event

Sunday Commons Market + Collage Workshop

When: September 6 at 10am - 12pm

Where: Sidewalk in front of 5210 Wisconsin Avenue NW (in front of the Pepco Substation) at Wisconsin Avenue and Harrison Street NW

Enjoy DJ Beats by DJ Duchess from 10-1 plus a collage making workshop by Khadija Jahmila from 10-12. All supplies will be provided for participants. RSVP required for the workshop. The Sunday Commons Market will be open until 2pm.

In this hands-on collage workshop, participants are invited to explore the creative possibilities of cut and torn paper. Through layering images, textures, and unexpected combinations, you’ll create your own unique collage while experimenting with intuition, imagination, and visual storytelling. Artist Khadija Jahmila will share her approach to working intuitively and finding inspiration through the process of play and discovery. All materials are provided, and no prior collage experience is needed. Everyone is welcome!

About the facilitator: Based in Silver Spring, Maryland, Khadija Jahmila (b. 1993) is an Afro-Caribbean mixed-media artist, mother, and teaching artist whose hand-cut analog collages explore cultural memory, folkloric traditions, and surrealism. Layering found and donated second-hand print materials with rigid substrates like wood and reclaimed metal, her practice celebrates the African diaspora by merging personal heritage with complex visual narratives. Professionally, Jahmila has exhibited and held residencies across the DMV region, notably serving as the Season Artist for Baltimore Center Stage and an artist-in-residence at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop and Eaton DC. Deeply committed to community-centered cultural work, she balances her studio practice with raising her family, teaching K-5 art year-round, hosting weekly family art programs, and facilitating public workshops that emphasize material transformation, storytelling, and creative accessibility.
