Sun Kin: 'Bobby's Voice', June Swoon

The most personal, poignant and ambitious project yet from **Sun Kin**, *Bobby’s Voice* is a cross-generational collaboration between LA-based multi-instrumentalist Kabir Kumar and his father, Rajesh Prakash Kumar, in conjunction with RP’s stage play of the same name. Written and performed by the younger Kumar with lyrics by the elder, the eight songs on Bobby’s Voice touch on the human cost of immigration, spanning two generations, two continents and more than 40 years in the life of Kiran 'Bobby' Kumar, RP’s brother and Kabir’s uncle, who passed away from a stroke in July 2018.
The father-son duo’s sensibilities fit together naturally, with Kabir shaping the impossible wealth of detail in his father’s lyrics into melodies as graceful as any he’s ever written. Kabir’s production allows samples to peek through the spaces in his sparse sophisti-pop arrangements, immersing the listener in the sounds of Delhi, while allowing enough space for his uncle’s story to live and breathe. Somewhere between the time-traveling conversations of the Fiery Furnaces’ Rehearsing My Choir and the fingerpicked family portraits of Sufjan Stevens’ Carrie & Lowell, *Bobby’s Voice* is the richest and most sophisticated Sun Kin album yet, and one of the most moving family histories in pop.
**June Swoon** is bedroom rock with equal parts honey and gravel.
