About Sergio Olivares III:

Sergio Olivares (1992) is a Chilean saxophonist, flutist and jazz composer born in the city of Copiapó, Chile. Influenced by his musician father and painter mother, he started playing music at an early age. His first studies were at the Copiapó Music Lyceum. In 2011 he studied and graduated in 2017 from the Geology degree at the University of Atacama. Later in 2018 he studied two years at the Escuela Superior de Jazz in Santiago and at the same time integrates numerous musical projects as a sideman to this day.
Sergio began playing the flute at the age of 8, studying mainly classical music, where his inspirations are J.S. Bach and W.A. Mozart. At the age of 12 he learned the saxophone and began his studies in jazz, where his main sonic mentors were Charlie Parker and John Coltrane.
His versatility has allowed him not only to play and collaborate with great players of the national jazz scene, but also with prominent artists of Chilean popular music, such as: Los Bunkers, Francesca Ancarola, Ángel Parra, Federico Dannemann, Cristián Cuturrufo, Daniel Lencina, Christian Gálvez, Felipe Riveros, Carlos Cortés, Sebastián Jordán, Felix Lecaros, Sebastián Castro, Alejando Espinoza, Rodrigo Galarce, Sudamerijazz, Mousso, among others.
Subduction is the title of his first album as a leader, accompanied by Sebastián Castro on piano, Nahuel Blanco on double bass and Carlos Cortés on drums. It consists of 8 original compositions in quartet format.
This album, financed by the 2023 music fund, was recorded and mastered by Nicolás Ríos in the Paloquemado studio and released by the Animals en la Via label.
