Summer Workshop Series: Suminagashi Monoprints & Beading Workshop

Please join us for an afternoon exploring the meditative processes of both Suminagashi Monoprinting (paper marbling) and Beading (necklaces, bracelets and keychains). This two-part workshop is hosted by Rainen Knecht and Lila Jarzombek, instructors from the new studio/art school located in SE PDX, House of Art & Craft.

Lila will lead the sumingashi monoprint workshop with a brief history and technical demonstration. Suminagashi, translated literally means “floating ink,” and it’s an ancient Japanese method of marbling dating back as early as the 12th century. In this mesmerizing process, colorful Sumi inks float on the surface of water and are transferred to a sheet of rice paper. Every print is unique and one of a kind. Participants will make many prints to take home! The prints created are versatile and can be combined used to make books/journals, cards, wrapping paper, textile design, collages, etc.

Rainen will bring a collection of new & vintage beads and charms, as well as some costume jewelry to be cannibalized. A brief intro to color and scale will be provided. String beads to make beautiful necklaces, key chains or bracelets. Participants are welcome to participate in both activities and leave feeling both swirly and sparkly ;)

About the Artists

Lila Jarzombek is a practicing artist, musician and educator who grew up in Rhode Island. She received her MFA in painting and drawing at the University of Washington, Seattle and her BFA in printmaking from Rhode Island College. She has taught Drawing, 2D Design, Color Theory, Printmaking and Painting courses in continuing arts education at RISD in Rhode Island, and college courses and print workshops at Rhode Island College, Community College of RI and locally at UW, Clark College and Multnomah Art Center. Lila has participated in several art exhibitions and has shown work with RK Projects in Providence RI and Egg Collective, NYC. More recently she has exhibited at TCMOFA, Olympia, WA, Left Field Gallery in CA and locally at Portland based galleries, Lowell Shop & Gallery and Hide and Seek.

Rainen Knecht studied at the San Francisco Art Institute, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a focus in Painting in 2006. After finishing her studies she had the opportunity to work in multiple Montessori preschools, followed by working at a variety of museums (starting with a kids museum in SF) while also working for a high end decorative painter. She moved to Los Angeles and ended up at the Getty Center, as an assistant to the conservators in the Department of Decorative Art, sculpture and furniture (DASC). In Portland she managed an internationally renowned artists studio for 8 years. Her exhibition history includes solo and two-person exhibitions at SITUATIONS, New York and CAPITAL, San Francisco, California, as well as recent group exhibitions at et al, San Francisco; Post-Times, New York, Shulamit Nazarian, The Pit and Various Small Fires in Los Angeles, California; Fisher Parrish, Brooklyn; SITUATIONS, New York and Stems Gallery, Brussels, Belgium.
