Christine Plays Viola is a darkwave / gothic rock band formed in 2008 in Abruzzo, Italy: transforming post-punk into something deeply personal and visceral, for fans of Joy Division, She Wants Revenge, Lebanon Hanover, and Boy Harsher. The current lineup features Fabrizio Giampietro (guitars, synth, programming), Massimo Ciampani (vocals), Gianluca Orsini (drums), and Marco Di Ianni (bass).
After nearly two decades in Europe’s alternative scene, Christine Plays Viola have built a solid reputation for their powerful blend of baritone-driven melodies, post-punk tension, and cinematic darkwave: delivering an intense, immersive live experience built on atmosphere, anticipation and raw emotion. The band has toured extensively across Europe, performing at major festivals including Wave Gotik Treffen (Liepzig, Germany), Tomorrow’s Ghosts (Whitby, England), and Castle Party (Bolków, Poland) and iconic venues such as Electrowerkz (London, England), sharing stages with artists like Das Ich, Clan of Xymox, Chameleons Vox, And Also the Trees, Pink Turns Blue, Modern English, She Past Away, 1919, and more.
In 2025, Christine Plays Viola signed with the iconic Los Angeles label Cleopatra Records, marking a major step forward in the band’s international trajectory and setting the stage for their most ambitious album yet. The fifth studio album, F.I.V.E. – Fear Increases Violent Emotions, was released worldwide via Cleopatra Records on 19 January 2026: the beginning of a new chapter for Christine Plays Viola, representing their most powerful and impassioned work to date.
The lead single, ‘My Redemption’, introduced this new artistic phase with a striking hybrid of darkwave and gothic rock: pulsating synths, brooding baritone vocals, and a soaring melodic climax. Thematically, the song explores pain, vengeance and rebirth — a statement of personal struggle and resilience. The second single, ‘Confession’, further expands the personal and sonic landscapes of the album, blending melancholic settings, hypnotic rhythms and a profoundly reflective lyrical dimension. The track reveals a darker and more intimate side of the band’s songwriting, reinforcing the dramatic suspense and emotional depth that define the F.I.V.E. era. Meanwhile, the third and newest single from the F.I.V.E. album, ‘Desolate Moments’ (April 2026), follows a similar trajectory to create one of the band’s most introspective and vulnerable songs to date: a fragile, moody, processional ballad exploring the loss of self and dissolution of identity.
BEHIND THE NAME
“Christine” recalls the Siouxsie and the Banshees song — a reflection of mystery and emotion in constant transformation.
“Plays Viola” evokes the fragile, human resonance of a bowed instrument — intimate, trembling, melancholic.
Together, they create a duality: beauty and decay, light and shadow, grace and disquiet. A name that captures the band’s very essence — where melody and anguish coexist, and every note becomes confession.

The Cult are a British rock band formed in 1983. Before settling on their current name in January 1984, the band performed under the name Death Cult, which was an evolution of the name of lead singer Ian Astbury's previous band Southern Death Cult. They gained a dedicated following in the United Kingdom in the mid-1980s as a post-punk/gothic rock band, with singles such as "She Sells Sanctuary", before breaking into the mainstream in the United States in the late 1980s establishing themselves as a hard rock band with singles such as "Love Removal Machine" and "Fire Woman". According to music critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine, the band fuse a "heavy metal revivalist" sound with the "pseudo-mysticism ... of the Doors [and] the guitar-orchestrations of Led Zeppelin ... while adding touches of post-punk goth rock".
Since the initial formation of Southern Death Cult in Bradford in 1981, the band have had various line-ups; the longest-serving members are Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy, who are the band's two songwriters.
