A celebration of the fullness of Summer and the brightest day of the year
About this Event

We have arrived at the longest day and the shortest night of the year. Let's celebrate the fullness of the Sun and all its vibrant power!

In the cycle of the seasons, the Summer Solstice is the peak of pregnancy, just before life bursts during the harvest. The sun is at the zenith of its journey and makes its victory dance at the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. The lush plants and trees reflect the magical vitality of the sun and the fertility of the earth: a most powerful union. This is a time of joy and celebration of achievement.

As Summer hits its peak, Autumn whispers its coming darkness. Just as the Summer Solstice rejoices in the warmth of the sun, it ushers in darker days and the waning of the sun. This marks the beginning of shorter days and longer nights as we progress into the harvest cycle of the year. This transition represents the surrender of the Oak King to his brother, the Holly King, who rules over the darker half of the year.

As a celebration of the Sun's final peak, people of the past have stayed up all night to watch the sunrise. Bonfires, as a symbol of the sun, were lit on hilltops, by sacred wells and grounds, and in temples. The firewood of preference was oak, and aromatic herbs were scattered onto the fire. Please danced around the fire, using herbs to smudge animals and each other as blessings. Torches were carried around homes and fields, and ashes were used to fertilize the land.
