Summer Social and August "Timeless Design" Talk

Join us on August 13th and connect with others in Naperville who care about historic preservation.

This event is free to our members, and open to all others who are interested in preserving Naperville’s built environment.

We will have complimentary snacks and soft drinks. Beer and wine will be available for purchase at the VFW’s bar.

During the second half of ourthe evening, Tom Ryan, our Chief Preservation Officer, will present the next in his series Ten Commandments of Timeless Design for Houses of Any Age.

Spoiler Alert - creating an Approachable House takes more than simply propping that ubiquitous ‘Welcome’ sign next to the front door!

Scale, Proportion and Balance for an Approachable House, the fourth Talk in a series about timelessness for all things residential, will explore how architectural elements, large and small, can help make a house look and feel welcoming to the neighborhood, neighbors and those simply driving or walking by.

We’ll start by looking at how decisions in new construction and remodeling can impact the planet’s health, then see how scale, proportion and balance can influence towns and neighborhoods and finally examine which parts and pieces of a house, in the right places, make a house truly approachable.

As a follow up to the Talk, we’ll Walk the Talk on the following Saturday morning, August 16th, going past examples of approachable houses, with a special final stop where we’ll see firsthand how the design and placement of interior and exterior spaces can create desirable unplanned social interactions between the homeowner and passerby.

The evening isTickets are free for Naperville Preservation members. Tickets for non-members are $10 each.
