The Summer Salon Des Independants will open August 21st, 7pm at the Hygienic Art Galleries in downtown New London. Modeled after the Salon Des Independants held in Paris since 1884, New London's outsider event is open to all artist; no judge, no jury no fees and censorship.
The Salon Des Independants movement was created by French Impressionists who were not accepted into the established Salon in the late 19th century. In an effort to protest the rigid art establishment, these artists exhibited their work in cafes in the seamy sections of Paris. This revolutionary movement included such notables as Matisse, Munch, Rousseau, Cezanne and Modigliani among others. The intent of the artists (and Hygienic Art) was to create an artistic event without jury or reward so that all forms of visual art expression and trends in the art of the moment would have a chance to be presented for public consideration without restriction.
In that spirit, all artists are welcomed to submit one piece of artwork for the exhibition. Sign in and hanging begins at 8am until 6pm. The exhibition opens to the public 7pm. The show runs until Friday September 10th. Art pick up is Saturday 12-7 and Sunday September 12th 12-4pm.
