Find your voice this summer at the Vespasian Warner Public Library District! Summer Reading is free and open to all ages, birth through adult. Registration begins on June 1 and the program continues through July 31. Readers will track their progress with a self-paced reading path and earn rewards along the way with prizes big and small! Over 600 community members participated in Summer Reading last year and library staff hopes that number will grow in 2023. Learn more about Summer Reading with some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).
How do readers get started? Summer Reading begins June 1 and runs through July 31. Registration begins on June 1 and readers can start right away. Getting started late? That’s okay! Register anytime during the summer at the library.
Do readers need a library card? No! Community members who live within the library district boundaries are encouraged to sign up for a free library card, but they are not required for participation.
How much reading is involved? Readers will select a group that fits their reading style and abilities. Warbling Bluebirds is great for young children who do not read on their own yet and will track each book that is read. Howling Hounds is awesome for kids who often read independently and will make progress every time they read for 30 minutes. Melodious Mackerel includes teens and adults who will be challenged to track each hour of reading.
Are there prizes? Yes! Reading paths are self-paced and there are no weekly date requirements or deadlines. Readers will earn up to six treasure box prizes and loads of entries for 20 grand prize drawings. Grand prizes this year include a Nintendo Switch Lite, Ninja Creami Ice Cream Machine, local gift cards, Lego sets, themed gift baskets, and so much more.
What type of reading counts? All reading counts towards reading goals. This includes books, magazines, newspapers, graphic novels, audiobooks, or even the back of the cereal box! Readers can use books from the library, home, or other sources.
Are there performers or events this year? Yes! All readers should save the date for Saturday, July 22. Details coming soon!
Why is Summer Reading important? Summer reading is critical for students to retain knowledge and skills learned in the previous school year. Adult participation is just as important simply because when children see grown-ups read, they will most likely want to read themselves.
