About this Event

The Summer Photography Course has been successfully running for many years.

In 2024 the course will run for 6 weeks from the 1st of July until the 5th of August 2024 at 8.00pm (until 10.00pm).

It is a great opportunity to meet like-minded people whilst at the same time improving your photography.

Many attendees stay on as members of the society and included in the course fee is membership until the end of the year.

It was oversubscribed in 2023 so if interested please book early.

All students will receive free membership of the Society until the end of 2024 - worth £40!

The course is a blend of practical and theory with the simple aim that by the end of the course you will take better photographs.

Over the years 100s of people have attended, enjoyed, and gained from taking part in the course.

We find that people attend for a whole variety of reasons with the common ones being;

  • Stuck in a rut of taking snapshots and wanting to take quality photos instead
  • Buying a dSLR and never taking it off the automatic setting
  • A rekindling of an interest in photography
  • Technique and science of photography
  • Practical assignments

There will be one outing on a weekend in Lloyd Park (probably after week 1 but this will be weather dependent).

Outline Timetable

  • Overview of the course content and learning objectives
  • A quick look at camera types and how they work
  • The rules of composition and how to create a visually interesting image, including the rule of thirds, leading lines, framing and selective focus.

Weekend travel photography: moving on from holiday snaps

Introduction to black and white photography: Understanding light, contrast and texture in black and white. How to edit and enhance black and white photos

Week 6 - August 5th

Mobile phone photography and social media

Additional ideas: infra red, intentional camera movement, night time photography and more.

  • Students showcase their best photos and receive feedback
  • Course review, questions, and what students can do next to continue developing their photography skills
  • Students will present (if they want to) their favourite photos they have taken during the course.
  • A bit about the Society and how it can benefit your photography.

All students will receive free membership of the Society until the end of 2024 - worth £40!

Each week practical assignments will be set that relate to what has been covered that week in the course.

This practical work is optional and whilst reviewed this is done anonymously. Many people find this the best aspect of the course as it stretches photographic skills into areas they may not previously have taken.

It doesn't matter what type of camera you own and we have attendees using their mobile phones.

The principles discussed can be applied to most cameras.
