Summer Oil Painting Workshop II: Understanding Form Through Observation
About this Event
Building on the core skills from Workshop I, this two-day intensive teaches you how to see the world like a painter and translate three-dimensional subjects onto a flat canvas. Students will dive deep into shadow logic, exploring how light wraps around form, the distinction between cast and form shadows, and how edge control defines structure.
Using an indirect painting method and a simplified four-value system, you will learn to execute complex elements like reflections and gradients while keeping your overall composition harmonious.
What You’ll Learn
- Observational strategies to analyze and paint 3D forms accurately
- The mechanics of light: form shadows, cast shadows, and reflections
- How to use a simplified four-value structure for stronger compositions
- Classical indirect painting techniques for building depth and luminosity
- Edge control techniques to convey surface, weight, and spatial depth
- Methods for painting complex, multi-object arrangements without losing visual balance
About the Instructor
Lyndon Simmons is a Canadian painter and educator whose practice combines traditional oil painting techniques with contemporary approaches to narrative and observation.
His teaching is grounded in an atelier-style approach developed through personal studio practice and years of working with students at different stages of development. Lyndon has taught oil painting at the Ottawa School of Art, where he focuses on structured skill-building, observation, and repetition to help students develop technical confidence and independence in their painting practice.
His artistic development has also been supported through residency programs, including the Ottawa School of Art Artist-in-Residence program and a summer residency at the New York Academy of Art.
Rather than focusing on stylistic imitation or short-term outcomes, Lyndon's instruction is centred on building transferable fundamentals that support long-term artistic growth.
