Regarded by publications and critics as one of the greatest musical films, Purple Rain is the 1984 rock music film scored by and starring Prince in his acting debut. Developed to showcase his talents, it contains several concert sequences featuring Prince and his band The Revolution. The cast also features Apollonia Kotero and Morris Day. The film grossed over $70 million worldwide upon release and won an Academy Award® for Best Original Song Score. In 2019, the film was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
