Summer Fruit Tree Pruning

This is an IN-PERSON workshop.
Come to Alemany Farm and learn about the basics of when, why, and how to prune apples and stone fruit trees, with an emphasis on summer pruning. This class will focus on the basics of tree biology and care to encourage a healthy and productive fruit tree. There will be a group lecture, followed by smaller breakout groups to look at trees and talk through strategies and how to approach a pruning session.
Note: This class will not focus on citrus trees, though the high level basics of citrus pruning can be discussed.
Vanessa Lieu, (any pronoun) is one of the Alemany Farm Managers and has been working with land, trees and community for many years.
Herison Leitao (he/him) is passionate about regenerative agriculture, agroforestry, and soil health. Originally from Brazil, he brings an academic background in Agronomy from the Federal University of Roraima (UFRR), along with a deep appreciation for ecological stewardship and sustainable food systems. He began volunteering at Alemany Farm in January 2025, where he quickly developed a strong connection with the land and community. Today, Herison manages the orchard program, focusing on regenerative practices, perennial crops, and agroforestry systems.
Suggested Donation: $35 per person; no one turned away for lack of funds. Our workshops are donation-based. Your donation supports the farm to grow and give away food for free. Please give at the suggested level or higher if you are able.
Accessibility Information: This workshop will be held outdoors. Roughly half of the workshop will be a lecture / discussion held under the shade of the willow tree and then a walking portion to look at the trees and orchards more closely. Alemany Farm is not ADA accessible at this time. Pathways and orchards are on uneven ground. The bathrooms are accessible only by stairway. We apologize for any inconvenience.
