ABOUT THE FILM:
You Are a Widow, Sir! (Pane, vy jste vdova!)
August 6, 9 pm | Gate opens at 8:30 pm (Rain Date: August 13)
Directed by Václav Vorlíček (1971) | 97 min., Czech with English subtitles
The film is an imaginative science-fiction comedy from acclaimed director Václav Vorlíček and legendary screenwriter Miloš Macourek, the creative duo behind many of Czechoslovakia's most beloved fantasy and comedy films. Blending political satire, mistaken identities, futuristic inventions, and outrageous slapstick, the film has become a cult classic of Czech cinema.
Set in a whimsical future where brain transplants are routine and scientific breakthroughs create endless possibilities for chaos, the story begins when a pacifist king announces plans to abolish the military. Alarmed generals hatch an elaborate assassination plot involving an artificial body, a notorious criminal, and experimental brain surgery. But when a series of spectacular mishaps scrambles everyone's identities, the conspiracy spirals into a hilarious chain of misunderstandings, bizarre transformations, and comic mayhem.
Featuring unforgettable performances by Czech acting legends including Iva Janžurová and Jiří Sovák, You Are a Widow, Sir! showcases the uniquely Czech tradition of "crazy comedies" (bláznivé komedie)—films that combine sharp wit, surreal fantasy, and playful social satire. More than fifty years after its release, its inventive humor, clever visual gags, and delightfully unpredictable storytelling continue to captivate audiences, securing its place as one of the great treasures of Czech popular cinema.
