Join us for an engaging and creative workshop experience, where participants will dive into the world of Collaged Sun Catchers. This unique workshop offers a delightful blend of colours, textures, and artistic expression. Participants will craft their very own captivating sun catchers that are perfect for brightening up any summer day!

During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to explore a variety of techniques to create stunning sun catchers. Using colour transparent film, bristol board, and paint, attendees will experiment with new shapes and overlapping colour combinations, resulting in truly one-of-a-kind creations. The process involves layering transparencies and cut-out bristol board shapes, utilizing stencils or frames, and allowing for endless possibilities of artistic expression.

No matter your age or skill level, this workshop is designed to be inclusive and accessible to all. Whether you're an experienced artist or just beginning your creative journey, our experienced instructors will guide you through each step of the process, ensuring a fun and rewarding experience for everyone involved.

Once completed, each sun catcher becomes a magnificent work of art that can be proudly displayed in your home. About the Instructor - Janet Hinkle

Janet Hinkle (she/her) is a mixed-race multidisciplinary artist with a practice rooted in both contemporary fine art and craft. With a fondness for mixing juxtaposing materials and a practice rooted in shared histories, she is driven to explore concepts involving identity. Pulling inspiration from both mid-century forms and futuristic design, her work manifests as installation, sculpture, gatherings, time-based media, and both human-food and human-flora interaction. She is also one third of studio.docx, a creative team that presents innovative contemporary art in public spaces to create unique community experiences. In addition to her creative practice, Janet Hinkle coordinates and curates art projects and artist capacity-building programs.

What can I expect?

Summer Arts Mississauga programs are a great way to learn new art skills or build on your existing artistic experience. There are a variety of workshops being offered, focusing on different artistic practices, including painting, drawing and photography – view the full calendar of events and activities here.

The Small Arms Inspection Building, owned and operated by the City of Mississauga, is a 1940’s building that is mid-restoration after being rescued from the wrecking ball by our community. The space has a unique feel, with massive windows and a skylight running nearly end to end, making it a perfect venue for art workshops.

Will materials be provided?

Please refer to the event details to see if materials will be provided for your workshop or if you need to bring materials or equipment.

Is there an age restriction for the workshops?

Please refer to each workshop details to see the ages allowed for the workshop. There are workshops for a variety of ages, including children, young adults, adults and seniors.

Is my ticket transferrable?

No, registration fees are only valid for the workshop for which they were purchased. Transfer or cancellations are accepted one (1) week in advance of the workshop or can be transferred to another workshop of comparable value. Registration and Enrolment

A minimum number of registrations are required for each workshop. When minimum numbers cannot be reached we will notify you in advance and provide you with a full refund or offer you an alternate workshop date and time if available.

Are workshop spots and space limited?

Yes they are. Each workshop is customized to ensure that the appropriate number of participants to the instructor ratio is maintained. This ensures we maximize the learning and enjoyment for participants attending the workshop.

Is Summer Arts Mississauga accessible?

Yes. The main exhibition space and all public facilities are barrier-free and include gender neutral washrooms. As in any private or public building, it is a smoke-free and vape-free environment. Please note that this is not an Allergen-free event/venue.

What COVID-19 precautions will there be?

Health and Safety is very important to us. Summer Arts Mississauga is operating under health regulations established by the City of Mississauga, Region of Peel Public Health and the Province of Ontario. COVID-19 safety regulations may be applied if required.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?

The Small Arms Inspection Building is located at 1352 Lakeshore Road East, on the south side, at Dixie Road. There is plenty of free car parking available on the site and in the area. Get directions here.

There is continuous MiWay bus transit using Route 23 along Lakeshore Road East connecting to the Long Branch GO Train station and TTC on the east (approximately 1 km) and to all points along Lakeshore to Port Credit and Clarkson.

Are any profits made going to a good cause?

Summer Arts Mississauga is presented by CreativeHub 1352, a non-profit, charitable, community-driven organization which exists for the advancement of community cultural development through the arts, heritage, and environmental sciences. CreativeHub 1352 is one of many groups vital to the reuse of the Small Arms Inspection Building. All proceeds are reinvested to support community arts, heritage and environmental programs.
