Sumi-e is a traditional Japanese Ink painting introduced to Japan from China during the 13 th Century to 14 th Century by Zen monks. In this workshop, Michiyo will briefly introduce the techniques and philosophy of Sumi-e. You will learn how to use a brush and behaviours of different types of paper, including rice paper and low-absorbent Western paper. You will mainly use native plants as the objects.
The lesson will focus on small-scale simple motifs in card sizes so that you can use them as cards also. In Sumi-e, a signature stamp (in red – called Rakkan) is an important element of the design.
During the class, Michiyo will ask you to provide a simple design for your own signature stamp and she will carve it on a rubber during the class. She will also demonstrate how to make a simple frame on which you can attach your artwork to be ready for hanging.
This is a small class of up to 8 students.
