An evening of both traditional Indian Kathak Dance and East-West Fusion with the fabulous Sujata Banerjee Dance Company in the setting of the recently-renovated Old Garrison Gymnasium in Colchester. Alongside a programme of superb Kathak dance and music, choreographer Sujata also explores new avenues with a new and innovative piece in which Kathak finds an evocative narrative counterpart in the structural depth and harmonic complexity of Vivaldi’s brilliant Four Seasons: Summer, inviting us to hear this well-known masterpiece of Baroque music afresh.
For this reinterpretation, the dancers of SBDC will be joined by Western musicians blending violin, viola and cello with traditional Kathak rhythms (tala) and gestures (mudra), to create a new narrative landscape and enhance the drama and emotional scope of Kathak’s expressiveness in a fusion that goes beyond aesthetic experimentation to reflect shared human themes, such as identity and transformation.
