Subhumans are one of the most influential bands to emerge from the UK anarcho-punk scene of the 1980s, standing alongside acts like Crass and Conflict in both impact and longevity. Formed in 1980, the band quickly established themselves with raw, politically charged music released through their own Bluurg label. Their debut album The Day the Country Died (1983), inspired by Orwellian themes, became a genre-defining classic, followed by the musically ambitious From the Cradle to the Grave (1984). Though they disbanded in 1985 after releasing Worlds Apart and the posthumous EP 29:29 Split Vision, their influence only grew. Frontman Dick Lucas went on to form Culture Shock and Citizen Fish, continuing his legacy of politically conscious music.
After sporadic reunions in the 1990s, Subhumans returned more permanently in the 2000s with new tours, the Live in a Dive LP, and the 2007 album Internal Riot. Their energy and urgency remain undiminished, as evidenced by their new material released via Pirates Press Records and ongoing tours across Europe and North America. Their commitment to social and political commentary feels as vital as ever in the age of Trump and Brexit, with themes of inequality, injustice, and resistance still driving their work. Subhumans continue to prove that punk isn’t just a genre—it’s a voice for change.
