Strike Up the Band: A Tribute to the Bands of the Bravest Opening Event

Celebrating the opening of our new exhibit, Strike Up the Band: A Tribute to the Bands of the Bravest, the NYC Fire Museum invites you to a special opening event, including an exhibition viewing and a screening of Through Triumph and Tragedy, a documentary celebrating the 50-year history of the FDNY Pipes and Drums.

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT: Strike Up the Band: A Tribute to the Bands of the Bravest

From the creation of the first FDNY band in 1900 through the present day, members of the department have used music to celebrate the achievements of the department in parades and exhibitions, and to mourn their losses at funerals. The first band in the department was formed in 1900, but only lasted a few years. In 1913, a full marching band was organized, and appeared in parades throughout the city, while also traveling the country performing in competitions. In 1920, a Bugle and Drum Corp was formed and coexisted with the marching band. With the formation of the Emerald Society (the Department’s Fraternal Irish Organization) in 1956, bagpipes came to forefront of the department's musical efforts, and remain symbolic of the department's musical endeavors. The FDNY Pipes and Drums was formed in 1962 and exists proudly to this day, performing in parades and dedications, while also mourning every fallen member at funerals.

ABOUT THE FILM: Through Triumph and Tragedy

Through Triumph & Tragedy - 50 Years of the FDNY Pipes & Drums is a documentary celebrating the 50-year history of the bagpipe band of the New York City Fire Department. What started out as a way for firefighters to celebrate their Irish heritage has become one of the most important institutions in the FDNY. After September 11, 2001, the band made it their mission to play every funeral and memorial service for the 343 members of the Fire Department that died that day. Their courage and dedication turned the band into a globally recognized organization and a symbol of freedom and honor. Chief of Department Edward Kilduff said it best - "The FDNY Pipes & Drums are the heart and soul of the Fire Department.”

The exhibition viewing will begin at 5:30 pm and the film screening will begin at 6:30 pm.
