Street Roots Movie in the Park with Summer Free for All

Join us at Overlook Park in North Portland for a fun-filled evening under the stars. Bring your friends, family, and a cozy blanket to enjoy a movie screening of Disney's 1992 film . This in-person event is part of the series, so you know it's going to be a blast! The evening begins at 7:30 pm with pre-movie fun and free popcorn for attendees, with the movie beginning at sunset. Before the show, Street Roots will be joined by our friends at and , so be sure to stop by and say hello! There will also be music, a Newsies themed , and .

Newsies is a musical based on the New York City newsboy strike of 1899. Newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer had just raised the price of buying a bundle of papers for the poor, young newsboys who sell them. A crew of the newsboys, referred to as "newsies," decide to form a movement and strike against the tyranny.

vendors are like modern day newsies! They sell magazines in public spaces, they are working to make an income, and the system used to sell and buy back newspapers between Street Roots and the vendors is similar to the system used after the newsies’ strike. Did you know? There are over 90 papers in 35 countries whose mission is to provide immediate, dignified, and legitimate means of earning income through journalism and advocacy.
