About this Event

This is a Special Event dedicated to Storytelling with Odissi Dance.

Storytelling through Odissi (and other Classical Indian Dances) fully utilises the use of our hands, feet, posture, facial expressions and stance to tell stories that encapsulates our relationship with others (such as lovers, child, good friend, universe) as well as our relationship with nature and her creatures. The dance holds a rich vocabulary that enables storytelling artistically using the body.

Traditionally, Odissi dances expressed stories that encapsulated the many colours of human emotion - playfulness, joy, sorrow, longing, annoyance, devotion, humour, fear, jealousy, ambivalence, and more - mostly drawn from Indian mythology, but not always.

In my personal experience, storytelling through dance is a beautiful and immersive experience. It opens a world of imagination we do not normally access in our daily lives. It also opens a world of reality that makes the mundane feel beautiful.

Join us for this special event. I will be sharing with you some simple storytelling 'vocabularies' and maybe see if we can string a little story together too.

Booking is essential (so I can lay out enough chairs!)

Donations Welcome: This is a not-for-profit event. Proceeds will go towards charity (TBA).

All welcome.

Here is an example video of Storytelling with Odissi, in this example the story of a mother trying hard to put her son to sleep!!

Note: This special event is a one-off that focuses on storytelling, and there are Odissi classes that run at this venue every Sunday.
