The fourth Tuesday of every month is storytelling night at Caffe Lena. Tonight's show will feature some of the finest storytellers from around the Capital Region who often serve as the featured artists for these monthly open mics. This month's featured tellers will be Marni Gillard, Claire Nolan and Sandy Schuman.
Marni Gillard was raised in a singing/storytelling Irish American family. Her Grandpa Walsh constantly reminded everyone,“Tell the Story!”Speak, sing, and share with FEELING! In the 70’s Marni taught middle schoolers to dramatize powerfully a favorite poem, story, movie moment or memory. Soon she drew young and old to the art of storytelling through workshops and performances. Her CD Without a Splash: Diving into Childhood Memories will remind you to learn from the moments of your life. Each summer she runs a storytelling weekend in the Adirondacks at Pyramid Life Center.
Claire Nolan. As a teacher of English as a Second Language at SUNYA, Claire uses story to connect with her international students. She also entertains audiences at parks and other venues throughout the Capital Region and across the world through Zoom, Facebook and YouTube.
Sandy Schuman is fascinated by familiar things and their unfamiliar stories. He brings folk tales and historical sagas to life (“some of our folklore is truly unbelievable, some of our history is even more so”) and reveals the little-known stories behind some of our best-known songs. When you hear him play the guitar and sing, you’ll know why he calls himself a storyteller.
