What does home mean to you? Join Susan Nerberg and Mervi Salo as they explore ideas of home in the Sámi Architectural Library. Created by the Sámi architect and artist Joar Nango to address issues of Indigenous resistance and decolonization, the mobile library forms part of ᐊᖏᕐᕋᒧᑦ / Ruovttu Guvlui / Towards Home.
Take a walk through the exhibit and listen to readings by Sámi writers reflecting on decolonization, identity, diaspora, and different possibilities of home. Nerberg and Salo will lead conversations and drawing activities around questions like: What is home? Where does land begin? How do our cultures affect how we see and think about land? Indigenous peoples’ connections to the land and ideas about home and sovereignty are central to the exhibition and this evening.
Susan Nerberg is a writer and journalist based in Montreal. She tells stories about climate science, built and natural environments, and Indigenous rights and culture. Her work highlights how people, including Indigenous knowledge holders and scientists, are furthering our understanding of our collective impact on the ecosystems that support us. She has published widely including in Canadian Geographic, the Globe and Mail, AZURE, and Broadview.
Mervi Maarit Salo is a principal in the Toronto District School Board. With twenty-five years of experience as an educator, she also serves as an elected chair for the North American SámiSearvi council and is a research collaborator on a SSHRC-funded project supporting innovative education programming, digital land-based technologies, and Indigenous perspectives in K-12 classrooms.
