Story Night: audio stories in Arabic & English (Berlin Premiere)
About this Event
In October, six audio makers gathered at a lantern lit camp in the Jordanian desert. Five days of writing sessions, hikes, a Bedouin coffee ceremony, and each night spent watching the stars.
Over the course of 8 months, the creators crafted their audio stories and many more were sent in from around the world.
After celebrating a world premiere in Cairo, now these stories are coming to Berlin.
On July 29, THE ECCO and Jiwar invite you to an evening of listening. Sit down, get a cup of tea, and hear eight creative short audio stories made by Hadeel Alkuttob (Amman), Mariam Boctor (Alexandria), Yasmine Mahjoubi (Casablanca), Basant Samhout (Cairo), Lili Sarayrah (Jordan and the US), Jasmin Bauomy (Berlin / Egypt), Jeff Emtman (Berlin / USA), and Mo Isu (Lagos, Nigeria). Told in Arabic and English.
What you will hear:
- Muddy Waters, Hadeel Alkuttob. The space between leaving and returning.
- Shorbet Lessan Assfour, Mariam Boctor. A modern retelling of the Isis and Osiris myth, on the weight of mother tongues.
- V6, Yasmine Mahjoubi. The cycle of a creative process, from a spark of an idea to self doubt and back.
- Adapting, Basant Samhout. A father and daughter talk honestly about old family patterns and new ones.
- How to Hear the Sky, Lili Sarayrah. A grandmother's unheard voice, and what it means to belong.
- Zephyra and the Whisper, Jasmin Bauomy. A magical realism story about ideas and attention, narrated in Egyptian Arabic.
- Night Birds, Jeff Emtman. A strange, fictional encounter with night birds.
- Faith Is a Choice, Mo Isu. The moment that cracked open a fear of death, and a simple truth about faith.
These are not news reports. They are personal, sometimes strange, always honest, made by people who rarely get space to tell stories exactly this way.
Language: mostly Arabic and English audio, with two English language pieces. Format: seated listening, around an hour of audio plus time to talk after.
Doors open 6:30pm. We start at 7pm and will take around 1.5 hours.
