The Little Tern is our smallest breeding seabird and one of the rarest - barely 1,000 pairs annually. They spend just three months with us before returning to their winter quarters in West Africa. The small colony in Hamford Water is by far the largest in Essex. The nesting birds may be viewed from Stone Point, but these views are often distant. However, the birds may often be seen feeding at relatively close range in Walton Channel and just offshore. Although this is by no means certain, this does offer a good chance of seeing these tiny birds plunge diving for small fish.
Note: there are no toilet facilities at Stone Point. The walk is approximately five miles and will involve walking over soft sand, salt marsh and mud, please wear suitable footwear, appropriate clothing and bring some water with you. Most importantly don’t forget your binoculars!
Booking essential - please contact the EWT centre on 01255 679379, email [email protected] or send us a message on facebook to book.
£7 per person.
