Step back into prehistory and discover the tools, materials and techniques behind some of the earliest forms of sewing and leatherwork.
About this Event

Led by experimental archaeologist and heritage educator Sally Pointer, this practical one-day course explores the evidence for early clothing and leatherworking, from the Palaeolithic onwards. Together, we will consider how people worked with materials such as bone, leather and sinew, and what archaeological evidence can tell us about the ways these materials were used.

Participants will get hands-on with prehistoric-inspired tools and materials, including bone needles, a bone awl and natural flax cordage. You will explore the use of these tools and techniques before creating your own prehistory-inspired sewing kit and designing a leather sewing bag to take home.

With over thirty years' experience in heritage and museum education, Sally specialises in researching and teaching historic skills and technologies through experimental archaeology. Her approach combines archaeological evidence with practical making, offering an opportunity to understand these early technologies by trying them for yourself.

Whether you have an interest in archaeology, traditional crafts, leatherwork or simply want to discover how people made and repaired clothing in the distant past, this course offers an accessible and practical introduction to the origins of sewing.
