Stitching to Blue: A Shibori & Indigo Dye Workshop

In this workshop, we will explore Shibori stitching techniques in combination with Indigo dyeing. Students will learn the basics of using thread to sew and bind fabric, creating various patterns and textures. This ancient Japanese stitching technique was traditionally used to decorate and embellish garments, particularly for the Japanese aristocracy and samurai class. Over time, it spread in use to everyday clothing and textiles. The process involves sewing and gathering the fabric to form resist areas where the dye cannot penetrate, resulting in beautiful, intricate patterns.

The morning session will focus on the sewing and binding process, while the afternoon will be dedicated to dyeing our pieces in the Indigo dye vats.

Some small fabric will be provided for creating samples and participants will be supplied with an 24" organic cotton hankerchief to stitch and dye.

Prepare to gain a foundational understanding of the shibori process and craft exquisite hand-dyed pieces to cherish.

Under Naomi’s guidance, anticipate an event brimming with alchemy, experimentation, and joyful creativity.

Participants should have some basic knowledge of basic stitching with a needle and thread.

This workshop is limited to 10 participants.

Timing

Morning session: 10:30 am-12:30

Lunch break: 12:30-1:15 pm (Lunch NOT provided however there are options nearby including Bento boxes at Fuijya grocery store)

Afternoon indigo dyeing 1:15-3:45pm

Workshop end: 4:00pm

Materials to Bring

All materials provided including sample fabric to practice stitches and a 24" organic cotton bandana.

Please bring a water bottle, lunch (if not eating out), dress in workshop-ready attire, and if available, bring an apron to protect your clothing.
