Join us for a special one-night-only pop-up by Amapolay Manufacturas Autónomas, a Lima-based collective working at the intersection of art, design, craftsmanship, and community, alongside a screening of Against the Grain: An Artist's Survival Guide to Peru, filmmaker Ann Kaneko's acclaimed documentary exploring the role of artists in confronting violence, preserving memory, and imagining more just futures.
Still Here brings together film, conversation, gráfica popular, music, food, and community for an evening exploring the enduring power of art, memory, and cultural resistance. We couldn't imagine a more fitting home for this gathering than Flavors From Afar—a restaurant, gathering place, and cultural home dedicated to celebrating the stories, traditions, and cuisines of refugees, immigrants, and Indigenous communities.
As Peru commemorates another year of independence while standing at a consequential political crossroads, Still Here asks what it means to remember when history threatens to repeat itself. This gathering is an invitation to come together not only to honor the artists and cultural workers who have carried memory across generations, but also to reflect on the work that remains ahead of us. In Peru and around the world, the struggle for democracy, Indigenous rights, collective dignity, and justice continues. Art reminds us that memory is not passive—it is a practice, a responsibility, and often a form of resistance.
The evening begins with a pop-up by Amapolay, whose collaborations with artisan communities across Peru celebrate Indigenous knowledge and popular culture as living, contemporary traditions. It continues with a screening of Against the Grain, a powerful portrait of Peruvian artists whose creative practices became acts of witness, resistance, and remembrance in the aftermath of political violence. Nearly two decades after its release, the film remains as urgent and resonant today as when it first premiered.
Following the screening, Ariana "Diosa" Rodriguez of Locatora Radio moderates a conversation with filmmaker Ann Kaneko and Amapolay Manufacturas Autónomas, exploring how art, craftsmanship, and cultural practice become tools for resisting erasure, carrying stories across generations, and imagining more just futures.
The evening concludes with music by DJ Ferkumbiastar and a special guest DJ, inviting us to remain together in celebration, conversation, and solidarity. Throughout the evening, guests are encouraged to gather over food and drinks from Flavors From Afar while exploring Amapolay's pop-up.
Supporting Families in Huancayo
In the spirit of solidarity, this gathering will also support families affected by the recent 5.1 earthquake in Peru's Junín region, particularly in the communities of Chupuro, Chongos Bajo, and neighboring districts, where many families have lost their homes and are facing urgent needs.
Throughout the evening, we will be collecting financial donations, and a portion of event proceeds will be donated to support emergency relief efforts, helping families access basic necessities as they begin to rebuild.
