About this Event
Celebrate the homeward journey of Still Creek's salmon!
Join us for free live music, art activities, speakers, salmon appreciation, and warm drinks and snacks to celebrate the annual return of salmon to Still Creek.
Special guests include Indigenous Women Rise, Mauro Perelman & Tania Grinberg Duo, Sesemiya (Tracy Cameron) and more to come.
Still Creek at Cornett Road is a particularly special place in East Vancouver. This is the farthest west in Still Creek that salmon have returned to spawn recent dacades, making it a key location for ecological renewal.
In 2012, salmon returned to spawn in this area for the first time in nearly 80 years. Since then, Chum salmon have returned in at least seven separate years, including the most abundant return in recent memory in 2024. We are hopeful that they will return again in 2025. Whether or not they make it as far as Vancouver this year, we will gather to celebrate the return journey of the salmon born on Still Creek, after 3 years of ocean living.
Still Moon Arts and the Still Creek Streamkeepers have been stewarding this area since 2019, monitoring water quality, removing invasive plants, replanting with native vegetation, and establishing a wildflower meadow area. We see this portion of Still Creek as a welcoming gathering place to celebrate the return of salmon, native plants, and other biodiversity.
