About this Event

Join The Marine Mammal Center and Wild Oyster Project for a hands-on exploration of our local Bay ecosystem! During this event, you’ll learn about marine mammals, oysters, and the many ways Bay species are connected. Participants will monitor oysters on the shoreline as part of a Wild Oyster Project C.O.S.M.O. (Community Oyster Science Monitoring Opportunity) that collects valuable data on wild Olympia oysters in San Francisco Bay. By the end of the event, we hope you’ll leave with a deeper understanding of how marine species are connected, a sense of what field work for marine scientists is like, and ideas for ways you can help protect our local waters.

Stewardship Saturday events vary in levels of physical and mental exertion. Please review the entire event description, including accessibility notes, to ensure this event meets your expectations.

We can sign for Community Service hours if you need us to!

Accessibility notes:

  • Working and communicating in small groups with youth you may not know
  • This event is entirely outdoors with limited bathroom access
  • Walking on uneven and slippery terrain
  • Squatting, stooping, bending, and kneeling throughout the event
  • Walking at least one mile

Free banh mis from Banh Mi Viet and snacks will be provided. All banh mis are on a Vietnamese baguette layered with cilantro, cucumber, pickled radish/carrots, Vietnamese mayo, and jalapeno. Please choose one of the following:

  • Pork – grilled five-spice pork
  • Chicken – grilled chicken
  • Tofu – fried tofu

This event may be cancelled due to weather conditions. We will notify you the week of the event if this happens.

Parking notes:

  • There is a free parking lot, but parking spots are limited.
  • Driver note: Adult drivers of youth are welcome to drop youth off and come back at the end of the event, or explore the local area during this time. We do ask that youth attend the events without adults to allow for opportunities to meet others interested in conservation. All organization staff are certified to work with youth.

As a nonprofit organization, The Marine Mammal Center depends on support from ocean lovers like you to rescue and rehabilitate sick and injured marine mammals, conduct critical research, and inspire the next generation to protect our shared ocean.
