About this Event

Join 18 Reasons and The Marine Mammal Center for a hands-on, food-focused event exploring how our everyday eating choices can support a healthier planet. Together, we’ll learn what it means to choose sustainably, eat sustainably, and make a delicious vegetarian meal. During this interactive session, you’ll collaborate to prep, cook, and enjoy a meal while learning practical kitchen skills and discovering how sustainable ingredients support the environment and the wildlife that depends on it. By the end of the event, we hope you’ll leave feeling inspired to make climate-friendly food choices, confident in your new culinary skills, and will have some goals for the next steps you can take on your conservation journey.

Stewardship Saturday events vary in levels of physical and mental exertion. Please review the entire event description, including accessibility notes, to ensure this event meets your expectations.

We can sign for Community Service hours if you need us to!

Free lunch and snacks will be provided

Accessibility notes:

  • Working and communicating in small groups with youth you may not know
  • Moving, standing, and working on your feet for most of the event
  • Be comfortable with holding and using a knife
  • Cooking and preparing your own vegetarian meal
  • Cooking and eating in a mixed-use kitchen

Parking notes:

  • If you’re driving, please allow extra time to find parking, as street parking near 18 Reasons is limited and some spots are metered. Nearby parking garages are also available, and free all-day parking can be found around Mission Dolores Park, which isn’t time restricted.
  • Driver note: Adult drivers of youth are welcome to drop youth off and come back at the end of the event, or explore the local area during this time. We do ask that youth attend the events without adults to allow for opportunities to meet others interested in conservation. All organization staff are certified to work with youth.

Transportation Notes:

  • The closest BART station is 16th Street Station (about a 12-minute walk)
  • If you are taking Muni bus, the nearest bus stops are 18th and Dolores Street (33) and 16th and Dolores Street (22)
  • If you are taking Muni Metro light rail, the closest stop is Church and 18th (J – Church)
