To say that Stevie Heger grew up in the music industry is a slight understatement. Born in Oakland, CA but raised in Monterey, Stevie has been entrenched in music since the ripe age of three when his birthday gift was a snare drum that came with a book AND a monthly teacher! Each following year, his birthday present was another drum or cymbal and by age ten, he had a complete drum set.
Singing and playing guitar and piano soon followed as he found himself performing in popular acts in Monterey including the Wylie Band who were always opening up for touring artists like the Flying Burrito Brothers, Blondie Chaplin (The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones), Rick Danco (The Band) and Huey Lewis and The News.
At 16, Stevie moved to Los Angeles to study percussion (jazz and soul) at Hollywood's Musicians Institute under Joe Porcaro (American jazz legend) while also engineering many recording sessions in the area. But his lucky break came one Christmas while visiting his family in Pebble Beach when Stevie attended a private fundraiser featuring Dinah Shore and The Beach Boys as the evening's entertainment. When Dinah's drummer missed his flight, Stevie's mother promptly volunteered Stevie to fill in on drums which he did so very successfully, it caught the immediate attention of Beach Boys producer Terry Melcher (producer/co-writer of The Beach Boys #1 hit Kokomo). Terry then introduced Stevie to The Beach Boys themselves, which led to Stevie's long time studio work as a session drummer with Beach Boys founding member Al Jardine at his studio in Big Sur, CA. Stevie has also worked as a studio drummer and engineer for Santana, Jefferson Starship, The Tubes, Faith No More and Metallica.
Stevie returned to the SF Bay Area in 1986 and pursued his own personal projects including seven solo albums and he has toured regularly throughout the United States,
United Kingdom and Japan, where he has developed a solid fan base. He also produced and engineered Al Jardine's debut studio album A Postcard from California released in 2010.
Stevie's current emphasis has been his solo performances in support of his most recent album, Songs for Smart Adults.
When he's not performing, Stevie's a lifelong surfer and either catching waves at his local spot in Carmel, CA or in Bali, Indonesia or he's out sailing the seas of Monterey, which might explain why he covered The Beach Boys iconic hit "Sail On, Sailor!"
