Sometimes we need to remind ourselves that Stone Soup Coffeehouse began over forty years ago in the living room of one of the founder’s homes. It became a place where local musicians could invite friends and perform their work so they could be heard. It was a community event that grew from house concerts to the undercrofts of churches, eventually landing at the Music Mansion on the east side of Providence. Tonight we get back to those early roots, well, not so much in a living room (although our venue is about as comfortable and inviting as one), but to bring in local artists to our stage. We will welcome Steve Allain, Christ Monti and Peter Avitable to play for your, our loyal audience. Each performer will perform a solo set. The show is on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at 7 pm at the Music Mansion, 88 Meeting St, Providence, RI 02906. Tickets are $22, and are available at the door or in advance through our website. ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Steve Allain: Born about a half an hour west of Boston, Massachusetts, in the city of Marlborough to French-Canadian parents, Steve Allain was raised on country music and Elvis Presley records. Although he didn’t play an instrument when he was growing up, other than the dreaded recorder in the fifth grade, he spent days daydreaming of playing music in a band. When Steve was nine, his family returned to New Brunswick, Canada. Family get-togethers with uncles, aunts, and cousins gave him his first experiences with live music. He eventually graduated from The Musicians institute in Hollywood, California, and later received a Bachelor’s Degree in music from Webster University (St Louis, MO) and a Master’s degree in music from The Cleveland Institute of Music (Cleveland, OH). These years really helped to shape the musician/composer/songwriter that he has become. Not only has Steve been praised for his excellent musicianship and soulful voice he has also been nominated for numerous awards. He is a must see live. Steve Allain is a solo artist as well as in Cardboard Ox a duo with established singer-songwriter Tracie Potochnik.
Christ Monti would like to be known as a Musician, Songwriter, Bandleader and Educator. His eclectic style reveals his passion for rock & roll, country-blues, early jazz, R+B, as well as music from the Americas, Middle East, India, and North & West Africa. Singing and playing electric guitar and harmonica in several bands, he leads The Chris Monti Band (featuring Theo Regan on bass and Michael Lewis on drums) playing an upbeat mix of original dance music along with West African and Caribbean songs. As a member of The Devilfish, a high energy, power trio dance band, he plays covers of great Rock, Surf, Mambo, Cumbia, Punk, Blues, Boogie, R+B, Latin Pop and Country Songs. Known for his effortless style and musical curiosity, Chris has been doing the good work as a musician in New England for over fifteen years. He has immersed himself in West African style guitar, dug deep into country-blues and old-time music, and moves seamlessly between diverse styles from Egypt, Peru and India. Chris has played with the Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars, Big Nazo, and the Double Decker Dance Band.
Peter Avitable will also be appearing on our Stone Soup stage for the first time. Pete will bring his understated wit, surprisingly impressive guitar riffs, engaging smile, songs and stories of irony, awkwardness, wisdom and humor to his audience, and we will get to know Pete for the first time.
