Step inside St. John's Church

The church of St John is packed with 17th-century pews to seat a large urban congregation. Join Dr Lucy Jessop to learn more about the pews and their significance, and how they have been changed and added to over time. Lucy is a Senior Architectural Investigator at Historic England, where she researches historic places and buildings across Yorkshire and the North East.

Meeting point: Entrance to St. John’s Church

Access information: St. John’s Church is accessed by a set of steps from New Briggate. The church advises wheelchair users to access the building using Merrion Gardens where level access is available. The path to the church across the churchyard can become slippery in damp weather. Inside the church there is seating available at points throughout the tour but the pews are a small step up from the floor level. Inside the church there is one step up to the front area of the building and the toilets are accessed using steps.
