Step Afrika! brings The Evolution Tour to Paramount Hudson Valley on February 13, celebrating more than 30 years of groundbreaking percussive performance. Recognized as the world’s leading authority on the art form of stepping, Step Afrika! continues to push the boundaries of the tradition, combining extraordinary rhythm, movement, and athleticism with contemporary artistic expression. The Evolution Tour features exciting new works alongside pieces developed through the company’s long-standing artistic relationship with South Africa.
The production showcases the remarkable range of stepping through works including Yebo, which blends the energy of Amapiano and Afrobeat with contemporary dance styles; Passing 30, a celebration of three decades of Step Afrika! creativity incorporating body percussion, spoken word, drumlines, and more; and Zulu, rooted in the company’s decades-long study of traditional Zulu dance. Audiences will also experience STRIKE, a powerful exploration of rhythm, sound, and the human body as a percussive instrument.
Founded in 1994 by C. Brian Williams, Step Afrika! blends the percussive dance traditions of historically African American fraternities and sororities with traditional African dance and contemporary art forms. Their performances go far beyond dance, incorporating storytelling, humor, songs, and audience participation into a high-energy experience driven by technique, agility, and infectious rhythm. Having toured more than 60 countries and earned national recognition for both artistic achievement and arts education, Step Afrika! invites audiences to experience the history, innovation, and sheer power of stepping live on the Paramount Hudson Valley stage.
*As a reminder, no outside food or drink permitted in the venue. Any patron found with outside alcohol, is subject to removal. Backpacks and large bags are not permitted inside of the venue. All guests are subject to bag checks and security wanding upon entry.
