Gramophone Magazine’s Young Artist of the Year for 2023, American violinist Stella Chen’s illustrious background features the likes of Harvard University, the Juilliard School and Itzhak Perlman. First prize winner at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2019, Chen tackles Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, allegedly deemed “unplayable” by its original dedicatee, but now a monument in every concert violinist’s repertoire.Music Director Earl Lee leads the orchestra in Jessie Montgomery’s jazz-infused Overture and Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10—a portrait of anguish, agony, and all-too-brief triumph.
