Instructor - Rachel Mello
Rachel Mello (she/her) has been an artist, designer, educator, and color consultant for over 20 years. Her mixed-media constructions build out of her background in theatrical scenic art and set design and her love for the quirky, playful, and weird.
Class Description
Learn sandblasting and multiple masking techniques for use in powder coating, while creating a steel pumpkin for your porch or garden. This course is equally suitable for beginners with no powder coating experience, or those who want to refresh their skills and learn a few more. Instructor provides cut shape, ready to prep and finish.
Class Goals
- Learn safe use of sandblasting and powder coating equipment
- Understand the necessary precautions and safety equipment
- Become familiar with shop etiquette
- Know how to properly clean and reset the equipment for the next user
- Begin to explore creative multiple color effects in powder coating
Materials Supplied
All materials provided. Instructor provides plasma cut steel jack-o’-lantern ready to sand blast and coat.
- All blasting media, masking supplies, and coatings provided
- PPE available for students who do not have their own
- Printed handout with steps and reminder notes
Material Fee
The materials fee for this class is $40. This will be paid directly to the instructor at the start of the class. This instructor accepts Venmo only.
Students Should Bring
- Closed toe shoes required to enter the metal shop
- NIOSH approved N95 or better dust mask. (Disposable masks will be provided for students who do not have their own.)
- Water bottle
- Layers: the powder coating room can get very hot with the ovens running and the metal shop can be chilly. Be prepared to add and remove clothing layers.
Prerequisties
Students must be 16 years or older; students under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult also registered for this class. There are no prerequisite skills.
