Boston Area Steampunk Gatherings presents:Steampunk Tea Potluck Party!
This Tea Party is intended to be free for everyone. The punks to the posh. We will all mingle together merrily... You do not need to know anything about steampunk to come have an enjoyable day with us.
If it is within your means however, please consider bringing some cash to donate towards paying for the expenses and pricey permit we purchased in order to use this beautiful park. The host would really appreciate help footing the bill.
You can also bring cash to donate at our monthly meetups: Boston's Monthly Steampunk Gathering. The third Saturday of every month from 6-9PM at Blackmoor Bar and Kitchen in Charlestown.
Decorations will be kept to a minimum but should be steampunk or tea party related. This gorgeous location has plenty of charm on its own.
This event description is broken down into sections so that you may choose which info is most relevant to you.
โ๐ฝ๏ธ๐ซ Tea Party โ๐ฝ๏ธ๐ซ
Bring anything Tea Party related.
This is thee perfect time to bring out your favorite teapot, cups, plates and dining ware.... Picnic baskets and blankets... Even tables, chairs and tablecloths if you'd like. So long as you can set them up without much interference with other guests. (Additional tables may not fit under the covered area.)These, you do not have to share with anyone other than you and your closest acquaintances. Let's see how fancy you can be!
Don't have any partea supplies? We'll make sure to have some things for you to use.
๐ฅ๐ฅจ๐ฉ Potluck ๐๐ฅง๐ฐ
This event is being held as a Potluck.
A potluck is when everyone who is able to brings enough for themselves and then some extra to share.
These can be drinks such as tea, coffee or whatever you fancy... or it can be simple foods such as cookies, pastries, pies, cakes, finger foods or platters for example.
Please post what you would like to bring in the discussion section of this event page then do your best to follow through with your commitments.
๐ฆโ๏ธ๐ง Steampunk ๐ฐ๏ธ๐ฆพ๐
Steampunk is the theme. While dressing up is definitely not required in order to attend, I highly encourage all of you to dress accordingly for this event.
Simplicity is sufficient... Things like, nice pants and a shirt or a dress... but if you feel most comfortable in sneakers, jeans and a hoodie, that's perfectly acceptable as well.
Extravagant is right on par though... Top hats, corsets, vests, dresses, jackets, fun hats... Just imagine if everyone dressed to impress.
In the discussion section of this event page I have posted examples of steampunk attire but you are free to put your own spin on things of course.
Steampunk is a form of science fiction. Take the styles and aesthetics of the Victorian Era... The 1800's from street urchins to aristocrats... Then blend in advanced technology powered by steam engines... Pirate ships suspended by blimps, mechanical limbs, automatons... Add in elements of adventure, comedy, romance and/or horror to your liking.
๐ช๐ซ๐ช Activities ๐ช๐ซ๐ช
There will be some amusing and entertaining activities... More may be added as planning proceeds and the date approaches.
The first of which will be...
๐ค๐ช๐ฐ Tea Duelling! ๐ค๐ชโณ
Tea Duelling is a battle of grace, precision and intense focus!
Two opposing persons sit facing one another.
They each take a Cookie...
Using only two fingers...
When instructed, they both dunk their cookies into tea...
More than halfway...
At the count of 5...
They remove their cookies and hold them up.
The goal is to outlast your opponent.
The victor is the person whose Cookie crumbles last!
Our second activity will be...
๐ซ๐ซ๐ซ Tea Pot Racing! ๐ซ๐จ๐
Get yourself a battery powered remote control car... Modify it to resemble a Tea Pot... Manually operated vehicles will be their own class... Pulling it along on a string for example.
We will have an obstacle course set up.
The Tea Pot that Races through the obstacle course in the shortest amount of time wins!
Examples of these two activities will also be linked in the discussion section of this event page.
Rules have been added to the discussion section of this event page.... as well as an explanation of our points system. So please go familiarize yourself with them.
Bribing the judges is not only allowed but gains you points!
The highest total points is the Grand Champion!
Our third activity will be a...
โโโ Crazy Teacup Contest โ๐ง๐ฅ
The Craziest Teacup wins!
Contest rules include:
#1 Safety. Your cup must be safe to use. It cannot get you sick or hurt you. The cup itself cannot be plastic... Examples: glue anywhere near the rim... sharp edges... are not allowed.
#2 Useability. It must be able to be handled by one hand. So no giant mugs that require two people to lift.
#3 Modification. You must modify your cup in at least one noticeable way. This will keep everyone from simply buying the same kooky mug online.
Judges will be looking for these three factors.
Originality...
Ease of use...
Impressiveness...
๐ช๐๐ช Kite Flying! ๐ช๐ธ๐ช
If you have a special kite you'd like to show off, now is your chance!
Any and all kites are welcome from classic to classy!
๐ท๐ฆขโฒ Photo Opportunities ๐ธ๐๐ผ๏ธ
This park has an abundance of splendid photo opportunities as well...
Next to the picnic area is a pond with not one but TWO beautiful bridges, a fountain AND a classy gazebo right on the water...
Across the pond is a public garden...
Behind the gazebo is a classic automobile museum! The building itself is glorious...
There is also a Pergola in Larz Anderson Park.
If you are a photographer, please message the host! If you have a camera, bring it along!
The discussion section of this event page has pictures and videos of these elements to inspire you to join us.
๐ณ๐ฆ๐ชป Area Description ๐๐ปโฟ
We will be using the "Covered Picnic Area" of Larz Anderson Park to provide shelter from the elements... There are 8 Picnic Tables under it, 6 grills and wrap around benches on both ends for plenty of seating.
There are many more tables and grills surrounding the shelter... as well as a sink.
The parking lot is a short distance away, along a paved path for accessibility.
A nice playground and two ball fields are immediately next to our area. Children are welcome.
A small building houses accessible bathrooms.
Pics and vids are posted in the discussion section of this event page.
If anyone has any concerns or suggestions, please message the host.
๐ธ๐ฒ๐ Travel ๐๐๐ ฟ๏ธ
Driving?
The best address to use for directions is 325 Goddard Ave, Brookline, MA. The parking lot is directly opposite from this address... Additional parking can be found atop the neighboring hill... Along the same road as the Auto Museum.
Taking Public Transportation?
The closest MBTA bus route is the 51. The 51 bus travels between the two stations Reservoir and Forest Hills... The closest stop is named "Clyde st. @ Whitney St.". It is a five minute walk away: .2 miles... (Reservoir is a stop along the D branch of the Green Line... Forest Hills is the last station at the end of the Orange Line.)
I recommend utilizing the Trip Planner on the MBTA's website.
Perhaps some you'd like some maps?
In the Discussion section of this event page are both...
where to park/additional parking...
and how to use the MBTA Trip Planner/directions from the bus stop...
(PLEASE DO NOT PUT LARZ ANDERSON PARK AS YOUR DESTINATION... for the MBTA Trip Planner or Driving or Google maps... The results will get very lost, frustrated and vexed.)
๐ฃ๏ธ๐๐ Rules ๐๐ญ๐ฎ
Because we are essentially a group of strangers getting together, I must go over some basic ground rules.
Rule #...
1: Do not damage any park property. I will hold you accountable because I am not trying to pay for any repairs.
2: Respect each other. That should be obvious but if I have it posted here, it is more official. This means, be friendly, kind and courteous. Help everyone get comfortable. This includes doing your best not to swear if there are children nearby.
3: No alcohol or smoking at the picnic area. Want to take a walk for a cigarette? I will not stop you... but BE RESPONSIBLE (like not causing a fire with your cigarette butts).
4: No music. Leave the music up to the host.
5: No "gatekeeping". Steampunk is not exclusive. People of all experience levels are welcome. If someone does not understand something, help them to learn in a pleasant manner. Anyone that mocks or says "That's not steampunk" will be asked to behave more politely. Inform your host and I will do so for you if need be.
6: Clean up after yourselves. Plenty of trash receptacles are available... and nothing hot will be put in them. (like cigarette butts, coals or candles for examples)...
7: Refrain from talking about politics or religion of any kind. If anyone asks you nicely to change the subject, please find something more peaceful to discuss.
8: No pets (besides TEA PETS... I know. I'm clever.)... I'm sorry. I do love me some animals... but... not everyone does. In order to have the most optimal experience for everyone involved, I'm afraid I must admit that the actions of pets can be unpredictable.
I doubt I will have to... but I do reserve the right to ask anyone to leave if they cannot be respectful... There are park rangers on the premises that get paid to remove nuisances should anything get too out of hand. Please review these rules again before the event because I may have to add more... This is to ensure maximum safety and enjoyment for all. Thank you for understanding and cooperating.
๐ซต๐ฏ๏ธ๐ฐ You can help promote! ๐คณ๐จ๐
We hope you'll bring your friends and family and anybody else you meet while time traveling.
Sharing this event page in your news feed, in groups and anywhere you can helps immensely.
An image that you can print and cut into flyers will be posted in the discussion section of this event page. Don't have a printer? The Public Library lets you print for free!!
Please remember to donate cash for the permit if possible.
