About this Event
State of the Global Hydrogen Sector and Scotland's Growing Role in Production and Export of It
by the Centre for Energy Policy (CEP) and funded by the Scottish Council on Global Affairs as part of the State of the World project.
Net zero targets around the world are driving a rapid shift towards low carbon energy. Hydrogen is often seen as a key part of this transition, especially for industries and transport sectors that are difficult to decarbonise.
Scotland has significant potential to produce low carbon hydrogen, supported by large renewable energy resources, existing energy infrastructure, and technical expertise. Expanding hydrogen production could reshape Scotland’s role as an energy exporter, with implications for economic development, jobs, regional growth, and international influence.
However, the outlook for hydrogen is uncertain. Around the world, some projects have been delayed or cancelled as costs rise and market conditions change. This raises important questions about the future of hydrogen, its role in the energy transition, and the policies needed to support investment.
- What role will hydrogen play in the global energy transition?
- Can Scotland become a leading hydrogen exporter?
- What are the economic opportunities and risks?
- What policies are needed to make hydrogen projects viable?
