About this Event

Stars, Stripes & Santa Barbara
Doublewide Kings Benefit Concert + Independence Day Pop-Up Exhibition Opening

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary celebration this summer, join us for a chance to relive the sights and sounds of summers past, featuring a special concert by the Doublewide Kings, and pop-up photo exhibition of treasured Independence Day memories from our recently preserved Santa Barbara News-Press Collection.

A wonderful opportunity to stand for community, history and great music.

With electrifying performances and a signature twist on songs by The Allman Brothers Band, Van Morrison, Neil Young, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Crosby, Stills & Nash, The Rolling Stones, and Grateful Dead, the Doublewide Kings capture the enduring spirit of rock and roll. Their love for acoustic roots and Americana traditions adds a heartfelt dimension, celebrating the music that has shaped generations.

Santa Barbara has long celebrated Independence Day with a style all its own. From fireworks lighting up the harbor and parades along State Street to beach barbecues, sparklers, and gatherings at “The Pits,” these traditions captured the sun-soaked spirit, community pride, and all-American energy that made Santa Barbara summers unforgettable.

Throughout the 20th century, the Santa Barbara News-Press documented these Fourth of July celebrations through the lens of its photographers. Now, moments many remember experiencing firsthand—or following through the pages of the local paper—are brought to life once again through this special selection of historic photographs, celebrating the traditions, nostalgia, and unmistakable spirit of summer on the South Coast.

About this Project
In 2024, the Santa Barbara Historical Museum acquired the Santa Barbara News-Press archive, safeguarding generations of local stories, photographs, and records that chronicle the community’s civic and cultural life. This extraordinary collection ensures that the voices, events, and everyday history of Santa Barbara remain accessible for future generations.

This landmark acquisition was made possible through the visionary leadership of our trustees and the generosity of hundreds of supporters.
