Starr and The Czars rise from the smoke and static of the underground like a fuzz-worshipping cult. Led by Jake Starr of Adam West, The Delicious Fullness, and Go Mod Go!, the band joins forces with Boston legends Peter Greenberg and Michael Lewis from DMZ, Lyres, Barrence Whitfield & The Savages, The A-Bones, and even Yo La Tengo. Add DC’s own Sean Crowley and Nat Osgood from The Hall Monitors, and you’ve got a new gospel of distortion that stretches from Washington to Lisbon.
Their debut LP, It’s The Bad Times, out on Chaputa!, KOTJ, and Ghost Highway, is a sermon in twelve fuzz-filled chapters. It opens with “It’s The Bad Times,” a garage exorcism in full swing, and descends through the snarl of “Deborah Deevine,” the bratty shout-along “Baby, Cry,” and the delirious “There’ll Be No Squopping of the Winks.” By the time “Flashes” fades, the ritual is complete — feedback still ringing in your ears, grin still on your face.
This is The Unauthorized Garage Gospel: raw, hypnotic, and loud enough to wake the dead. The bad times are here — and they sound magnificent.
