Star Matriarch
Star Matriarch is a project by multi-disciplinary artist Carol Bui, who traversed the indie rock landscape of the 2000s out of Washington, DC where she absorbed creative power from the legendary DIY punk scene. After a 10+ year hiatus, Carol returns as the beautifully terrifying Star Matriarch, now based in her new hometown of Tacoma, WA. Her 2025 inaugural LP release, Red Ship, is an empowering rock catharsis that rejects the shame prescribed for those asserting agency under colonized femme-hood. From her boisterous drums that somehow suggest both post-hardcore and Levantine folk, her lyrical yet abrasive guitars, to her emotively robust voice, Star Matriarch displays the full spectrum of emotions that come with being an Audhd mother of color and (former) sex worker under Imperialist capitalism; sacred rage, disarming joy, deep grief, and spiteful celebration. A stunningly embodied record, Red Ship commands a fully somatic listening experience, challenging the limits of a supposedly dying genre. Red Ship is available on vinyl and all streaming platforms via feminist punk label Exotic Fever Records.
Fantazma
FANTAZMA is a DC punk band with an eclectic style that blends elements hardcore and metal, including fast chaotic riffs, tempo changes, heavy breakdowns, and dark sonic textures. Their noisy soundscape is complemented by nods to their Latin music influence and bilingual lyrics with harsh political themes.
Hard Softee
Hard Softee is a rock quartet based in Tacoma, WA. The Softees bring a collective century of musical experience to listeners of all backgrounds; providing them something new and different to enjoy. Hard Softee explores a unique spectrum of math rock that embraces smoother elements of jazz and pop and juxtaposes it with aggressive hardcore and metal. Through a fully-concerted and more-than-just-musical effort, Hard Softee tastefully dances between themes of darkness and whimsy.
